Re: HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer

Yes I believe that's the one I have set up at my family's store. Of course I am remote at the moment and the power is out there due to storms, but it certainly wasn't straightforward. You need to use the hplip package to install the proper drivers and it should configure the printer into CUPS. I wil...

Re: Volume icon in the tray not present

I have not used Cinnamon in atleast 4 years and I do not recall a specific package for the audio widget but that doesn't mean there isn't one. I recommend searching the repository for any packages that may be related by name or description. Also be sure to check the settings, for example, of the Sys...

Re: Void Linux stuck on "Deactivating crypt volumes" forever

Hello Septim, Are you able to identify what devices are on the pci addresses indicated by udev as being slow? lspci -v and dmidecode are good commands to start hunting for this data. If you see that they are identical devices on both laptops, perhaps it's a Linux driver issue in general. Have you ha...

Re: Maintenance

I just meant that if you didn't like typing in your password every time you use doas, you can add persist to the first line and you will only have to the first time you use doas for each session and it will timeout again after 5 minutes.

Re: Maintenance

Yes it is effectively the same as me using the entire wheel group but only for one user. Does it all for the password again immediately after another doas command? If so you can use the persist option so it won't so for the password for 5 minutes of not using doas.

Re: Maintenance

Yes it would work just fine.. If you want it completely non-interactive you would have to add the -y flag to xbps-remove as well. For what it's worth, you can either call the script as root, with sudo, or with doas. Or you can call the script as your own user and use doas or sudo in the script to ex...

Re: Mintstick Installation

What have you tried? Have you made a xbps-src template file to try yet? If so, can you paste it here so I and others can give it a shot? Also, are you sure you need an application like this to make a bootable USB disk? Normally, the USB stick or ISO image from any Linux or BSD vendor works out-of-th...

I suspect you're missing some fonts you may desire to have.

Code: Select all

xbps-query -Rs font
I've also noticed subtle differences between X11 and Wayland Plasma sessions. Likewise subtle differences between my Intel iGPU and Nvidia GPU. Neither of which look like what your image shows.

Re: Cinnamon on Void Base

How about the cinnamon-all package? It doesn't appear to have a dependency on any display manager like sddm, so you may have to install sddm or another display manager as well. For services, you'll probably want your display manager service enabled, and Cinnamon may also depend on dbus being started...

Re: Cinnamon on Void Base

To get the base Cinnamon environment, I believe all you have to install is the cinnamon package. It may bring in sddm as a dependency but I use sddm and will have to be enabled as a service for easy graphical login, and it works with other desktop environments as well. I can easily select between Ci...

Re: Preferring IPv6 over IPv4 LAN-wide

I disagree with that. Sure ads are being served over IPv6 and IPv4 alike, but in either case, ads on websites and apps are blocked through an adblocker like uBlock Origin or through a DNS recursive name server RPZ like what Pi-Hole does. The ad should have nothing to do with which IP version it uses...

Well I tried and tried. I deleted all the patches and had to have it download a different build dependency but this stuff is generally beyond me. # Template file for 'kodi' pkgname=kodi version=21.0 revision=1 _codename="Omega" build_style=cmake configure_args="-DWITH_FFMPEG=/usr -DAP...

Re: Kodi

Hi Jeff,

I am trying to build it now on my end to see if I can't figure it out. To update the version you have to modify the srcpkgs/kodi/template file. I will update the thread in a bit with my success or failure (probably the latter as I am not great with these build scripts).

Securing and speeding up travelling laptop DNS

I travel alot for work and therefore stay in alot of hotels on open WiFi networks. I have secured many things such as using a WireGuard VPN to connect to my home network, a conservative firewall policy, and HTTPS everywhere but DNS has not really been one of the things I have tackled previously. I r...

Re: Installation script or something

I thought it might also be worthwhile that you can send a snapshot of a Btrfs subvolume to a file and put the file on a NAS, USB drive, anywhere for the same purposes. btrfs send -f mybaseinstall_btrfs.img ./snapshots/voidroot@mybaseinstall Then you can move the mybaseinstall_btrfs.img file as desir...

Re: Installation script or something

If you want to start from an identical install every time, you might be served better with a USB stick with an image of your ideal Void setup and dd it over to the Chromebook. Also using a filesystem like Btrfs can have multiple base Void installations within while preserving others (i.e. /home). Ma...

Re: Which filesystem do you use on Linux

I started small, using Btrfs solely on a single partition for Gentoo's /usr/portage directory. It made sense because I was able to compress the data by nearly 50% and saved even more because ext4 ran out of inodes well before it ran out of space if using default values. Btrfs solved that for me. Min...

Re: Which filesystem do you use on Linux

Okay I think I know what you're talking about. The ENOSPC issue. Yes I have ran into that issue maybe twice over the many years and it was easily avoidable but I pushed it with risky corner case issues. It is noteworthy that both times I was able to solve it using btrfs balance as instructed to help...

Re: Which filesystem do you use on Linux

I am still using ext4, because it is reliable, fast and because I understand the background of this format. In principle I am curious about btrfs, but as long as the balancing of the meta data is not working well I will avoid it. What metadata balancing issue? I am not aware of any in recent or sem...

Preferring IPv6 over IPv4 LAN-wide

I have been watching the progression of IPv6 adoption around the internet as a curiosity for some time and decided to do my part in prioritizing IPv6 traffic everywhere that I am able. 2ybwh2.jpg I have 3 servers in my basement with many FreeBSD jails and virtual machines on them and more than 95% o...

Which filesystem do you use on Linux

Please vote in the poll and comment on this thread as to your choice of filesystem(s) used for your root (/) partition on your systems. You can choose multiple as you may have different filesystems among different Linux installs or computers. I use Btrfs for everything other than /boot (ext4) and /b...

NVIDIA drivers 555 are in BETA and Wayland is very usable now!

I have updated my gaming desktop to the NVIDIA 555 beta drivers last night to try to get Wayland running perfectly with Plasma6 and Steam games. It is a great success! No more oddball screen glitches or game stuttering! To accomplish this, you will have to use xbps-src to roll your own nvidia driver...

Kodi

Does anybody use Kodi anymore? It used to be up to date on Void but hasn't been updated since 2 major versions ago. Considering I used a shared MySQL database and HTTP media shares between 2 Xboxes and multiple PCs, this has been an issue as differing major versions use different database. Anyone wi...
